First Aid off to a Tee
Paisley Golf Club is on course to becoming one of the first Renfrewshire clubs to introduce life saving training and equipment to its staff. Two of the club's staff recently completed a four-day Workplace First Aid course at Reid Kerr College and following the success of this training, the Club have now ordered an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machine. It is hoped that a further three members of staff, including the Secretary/Manager, will complete the required training to operate the machine at Reid Kerr College over the coming months.
John Hillis, the Secretary/Manager of Paisley Golf Club said, "Having started my career in the oil industry, I was surrounded by people with the training and ability to perform First Aid to a high standard. In the Golf Club environment, more and more senior members are playing the game and consequently spending time at the Club. We believe that we need to prepare for any emergency. If a member or visitor at the Club suffers cardiac arrest, we want to provide as much help and as quickly as possible. Making the commitment to provide staff training and life saving equipment at the Club is a major step forward and I'd recommend that every Club considers it."
Senior Lecturer in Healthcare, Anne Usher, added, "The defibrillator is very easy to use. By following voice prompts the machine tells the operator exactly what to do and will not charge up unless the casualty's heart has gone into arrest. With the increased emphasis on Health & Safety in the workplace, and the commitment of companies and individuals to make workplaces safe, deployment of this type of equipment can potentially save the life of someone in Cardiac Arrest."
Continuing to improve the services offered by the Club, Paisley Golf Club plans to extend an invitation to all members of the Club to participate in a 2-day Heartstart course at Reid Kerr College. Taken over 2 hours, this British Heart Foundation programme, covers key first aid measures including the causes of unconsciousness, resuscitation, heart attack, choking and bleeding.
