Students with a Specific Learning Difficulty - Dyslexia

The College provides support for dyslexia, which is the most common specific learning difficulty found in further and higher education.  Learning Plus also supports student with dyspraxia and attention deficit disorders.

Dyslexia is complex and therefore it is difficult to describe.  It is not just a difficulty with spelling and reading, but is a difficulty with information processing and can affect speed of processing and organisation written work, or time management.  There is no link between intelligence and dyslexia.

The College can provide the following support for students with dyslexia:

  • Initial screening
  • Specialist assessment, where appropriate
  • Specialist software and training
  • Study skills
  • 1:1 teaching for spelling/reading difficulties
  • Exam arrangement
  • Colour filters
  • Guidance about how you learn
  • Transition advice (to university or work)

Learners can refer themselves throughout the application process or at any point throughout their course - talk to your course team leader, either at interview, or during guidance.  An interview will then be arranged for you to discuss your support needs.

We asked some current and former students for their thoughts and views on the support they received at Reid Kerr College:
