This is a broad-based business qualification, which aims to provide the skills necessary for career advancement and employment in Administrative, Managerial or Commercial positions.  It also articulates directly to many diploma/degree programmes in Business.  Subjects include: Business Accounting/Finance, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Databases, Using the Internet in Business, Business Management, Marketing, Economics, Law.

Core: Using Software Application Packages (Word Processing, Database & Spreadsheets), Business Accounting, Economics, Marketing, Communication, Management.

Options: The following streams are available: Information Technology, Languages, Marketing, Enterprise, Finance, Law.

Entry Requirements
1 Higher or 12 Relevant SQA Units at Intermediate 2 or equivalent or other relevant qualifications or experience.

Study Mode
Full time, Part Time, Day Release, Evening & Distance Learning.

Progression To
Access to 2nd Year HND Business or Degree Courses.  Part exemption from various Professional Qualifications.

Careers Paths
Entry and Supervisory Level Administrative, Managerial or Commercial positions in Businesses. Self-Employment.

DISTANCE LEARNING

(12 Credits)

Aim:
To provide the skills required by employers of those engaged in entry-level administrative, managerial or commercial positions in organisations. The HNC Business is a broad based qualification giving students scope to develop and progress within organisations of all sizes, including one which they may set up themselves. It also enables students to progress to further academic and professional qualifications namely HND Business and Business degree courses.

Length of Study:
The course consists of 12 Higher National Credits, each of which lasts 18 weeks with tutor support.

Entry Requirements:
1 Higher OR 12 Credits at Intermediate 2 or equivalent. Special consideration will be given to mature students with extensive work experience.

Contents:
The course offers mandatory units in the main business areas, management, accounting, information technology, economics, marketing and communication. There are various options on offer including accounting software (Sage), marketing research and law.

Study Method:
Home-based, self-study with a tutor to contact for help and advice.

Assessment:
Assessments include the following: case studies, in class assessments, reports completed at home, practical IT problem solving, and a formal exam (Graded Unit) at the end of term. The graded unit will take the form of questions on a case study, and must be undertaken under supervised conditions. Some unit assessments must be taken under supervised conditions either in college or elsewhere with appropriate invigilation. A detailed course handbook is available on request.
