Reid Kerr Student Wins Top Entertainments Award
Reid Kerr College Acting student Omar Raza was recognised recently at the Young Scottish Muslim of The Year Awards. The glittering event, lead by First Minister Alex Salmond, recognised the contribution Islamic youths make to their local community and to Scotland as a whole.
Hosted by comedian Johnathan Watson, the awards ceremony featured twelve categories and Omar scooped the top award within Arts and Entertainment. Described as bringing respect to the field of Islamic actors within Scotland, Omar was honoured to receive this accolade. He said, "I was shocked to win this award and feel that this recognition is a mark of the hard work that I have put into my career and more importantly the work that I have undertaken within my local community to date."
Morven Pringle, Head of Centre for Performing Arts at Reid Kerr College commented, "Omar is a fantastic student and a pleasure to teach. He deserves this award for his dedication to both his studies and to his faith. Omar gives 100% all of the time in all of his actions and is an inspiration to other young people."
Dedicated and passionate about the Arts, Omar, 19 from Glasgow has already achieved success with the Comedy Unit on the BBC 4 radio comedy, Fags, Mags & Bags. His Islamic artwork is currently on display at the Art House Hotel in Glasgow as well as the Larkfield Community Centre, to raise awareness and educate communities about muslims and their views. His banner, "all different but United" has been used for various campaigns and also been seen on countless news channels.
Currently studying for a Higher National Diploma (HND) Acting & Performance at Reid Kerr, Omar's says his future lies in either Drama School or he may continue to develop his career within the acting industry depending on what doors open for him in the future.
